Step-by-Step Instructions on How to Buy Stocks and ETFs with Merrill Edge
Investors who want to trade stocks through a low-cost brokerage firm may want to consider Merrill Edge. With a strong website, buying and selling equities with the broker is straightforward. Follow the steps below, and you can start trading quickly.
1. Go to MerrillEdge.com and Log In
Sign in at MerrillEdge.com with your User ID and password. If you need help, call Merrill Edge at 1-877-653-4732. Representatives are available 24/7, including technical specialists. After you enter your login details, your brokerage account will appear. You can also connect any Bank of America accounts you have so that all accounts show under one login. If you need help while signed in, click on 'Help & Support' in the upper-right corner of the page.
2. Conduct Research First
Click on 'Research' and choose 'Stocks' from the drop-down menu. In this area, Merrill Edge gives users many helpful resources for researching investments. The firm has a strong stock screener that searches for equities based on filters such as market cap, dividend yield, and P/E ratio. The Merrill Edge website also includes preset screens that focus on useful categories, such as stocks with strong revenue growth or stocks trading near a 52-week low.
Once you have narrowed your search, you can choose a stock. For example, suppose you decide to buy Exxon Mobil (ticker symbol XOM). Enter the ticker or company name in the 'Quote' field. A drop-down menu will appear with several company choices. Select the stock you want. A box with key details about that stock will appear automatically. Information such as dividend yield and a small chart is displayed. You can click on 'Trade' if you have finished your research and are ready to enter a buy order. Clicking on 'Research' will take you to more details about the stock. There, you can find stock reports and ratings from
Morningstar, CFRA powered by S&P Global, and BofA Global Research. These useful documents can help you understand how professional analysts view a possible investment.
