E*Trade IRA Account Types

E*Trade has several varieties of IRA's. The broker offers Roth, Traditional, Rollover, OneStop Rollover, Beneficiary, Complete, Minor IRA in both Traditional and Roth formats, SEP, and SIMPLE accounts. Charles Schwab provides a lightly smaller selection of IRA’s. Schwab clients can open a Roth, Traditional, SEP, SIMPLE, Inherited, Custodial, or Rollover account.


IRA Fees and Minimums

IRA fees at E*Trade compare favorably against competitors: there are no inactivity fees, no minimum balance requirement, and no annual fees. There is no minimum opening deposit requirement for an IRA. The broker does have a $25 fee for early withdrawals (prior to age 59½). Another $25 charge is assigned if too many contributions have to be taken out of the IRA. E*Trade charges another $25 fee for recharacterizations.

Retirement accounts at Schwab have no setup fee, no annual fee, and no inactivity fee. There is a minimum opening deposit of $1,000 for all IRA's, except the Custodial account, which has a $100 minimum. The $1,000 minimum can be waived with automatic monthly deposits of at least $100.


Mutual Funds

Retirement savers at E*Trade have access to more than 8,000 mutual funds. More than 1,300 carry no transaction fee and no load. Funds with a transaction fee are $19.99 to buy, sell, and exchange.

Schwab provides over 5,000 mutual funds for its clients. Of these, more than 3,500 are OneSource funds. These mutual funds have no load and no transaction fee. Funds that do carry a transaction fee are a rather expensive $76 to buy, although there is no charge to sell.


IRA Calculators and Tools

E*Trade has a good selection of useful retirement calculators. There are calculators for IRA conversions, inheritance, and account distributions.

Schwab also has some helpful calculators. For example, one shows if and when withdrawals from an IRA must be taken within IRS guidelines. The firm also has a helpful tool to evaluate a potential IRA conversion.


IRA Videos and Learning Materials

E*Trade customers will find a variety of educational products on its site geared towards retirement savers. The broker has articles, web seminars, and videos in its educational section that deal with retirement issues. These instructional materials encompass a range of topics, such as choosing a beneficiary, planning for retirement, and Roth IRA conversions.

Schwab has a useful library of videos on its website relating to IRA's and retirement issues. These videos discuss several vital topics, such as account recharacterization, how to convert a 401(k) to a Roth IRA, and how to use an IRA for estate planning.
