How to Buy and Sell Stock on Ally Invest

If you’ve just opened an Ally Invest account and are ready to start trading, this article is for you. We are going to give a brief overview of how to buy and sell stocks in your Ally account.

Placing a Buy Order on Ally Invest

To place a buy order on your Ally account, you will select “Stocks & ETFs” from the Trading menu at the top of the screen, which will open up the below trade ticket. You will then enter in all the details for your order, including the stock’s ticker symbol, the number of shares you want, and the order type you want to place (usually a market or limit order).

A market order is when you are instructing Ally to purchase the shares immediately at whatever the current ask price is, whereas a limit order allows you to specify the highest price you are willing to pay and Ally won’t execute your trade until it can get that price or a lower one.

Placing a Sell Order on Ally Invest

When you’re ready to sell stock in your Ally account, it’s a very similar process as when you purchased it - you’ll go to the same trade ticket screen and enter in the stock symbol, number of shares you want to sell, and the order type.

If you choose a market order, Ally will sell your shares immediately at the current bid price, just as we described earlier. If you would like more control over the price your shares are sold at you should choose a limit order, which, as shown in the below screenshot, will allow you to dictate the lowest possible price you would want to sell your shares for. Ally will only execute your limit order to sell at your price or a higher one.
