TD Ameritrade has worked to eliminate excessive fees in recent years, and it certainly has succeeded in its IRA offerings. The broker charges nothing to open an IRA, to maintain one, or even to close one. A retirement account can also be opened with a $0 balance.

While there are no annual, low-balance, or inactivity fees associated with a TD Ameritrade IRA, the broker does charge $75 to transfer a retirement account to another firm. Apex clients (investors who place 15 trades per quarter or have a balance of at least $100,000) receive the service for free, however. All clients can perform a partial transfer at no cost.

TD Ameritrade IRA Pricing Schedule

Stock and ETF trades placed at TD Ameritrade cost $6.95. There are 296 exchange-traded funds that can be bought and sold without paying any commissions. These products do have a short-term redemption fee of $19.99 if they are sold in less than one month. Many of them have tight bid-ask spreads and expense ratios below 0.25%.

The TD Ameritrade mutual fund screener returns more than 11,800 securities that are open to new investors. Of these, approximately 3,700 carry no load and no transaction fee. Some of these funds are target-date funds, products that were created for retirement investors. Available fund families include T. Rowe Price, American Century, and PIMCO. Some of their funds carry no load and no transaction fee.

Buying or selling a fund that isn't on the firm's NTF list carries a $49.99 charge. If a fund is on the list, it will have a short-term redemption fee of the same amount if it is sold in less than six months.

TD Ameritrade IRA Fees Comparison

Not having an annual IRA fee is a big plus for long-term retirement savers. Other brokers do impose some type of on-going fee for IRA's. Vanguard has a $20 annual fee. There are methods to avoid these charges, however. Signing up for electronic delivery of account documents, placing a trade, or maintaining a sufficient balance, can waive these charges.

TD Ameritrade's policy of not imposing a fee to close an IRA is also very generous. Most other brokers do charge something. A Fidelity IRA, for example, costs $50 to close; while WellsTrade charges a much steeper $95.

A $75 IRA transfer fee is fairly expensive by industry standards as well. Schwab, for example, charges $50, Merrill Edge is at $49.95, and Vanguard traders pay nothing.
