Tastyworks Options Commissions: Per Contract Pricing, Puts, Calls, Assignment and Exercise Cost 2022

If you’re an active retail options trader, you want to use a platform where the commission and fee structure supports your trading style. Since Tastyworks co-founders are veteran CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange) floor traders, the entire platform is geared towards the tools, needs, and pricing that is most beneficial to active traders.

The Tastyworks platform is affiliated with the Tastytrade financial education network, a free retail options and futures trading education media company whose live video content is streamable through the Tastyworks app. The mantra behind Tastytrade’s options education is “trade small, trade often,” where a higher number of relatively smaller risk-managed trades puts probabilities of success in the favor of retail investors. A fee structure that supports this mindset is how Tastyworks was developed.

If you regularly trade covered calls, naked or cash secured puts, put and call spreads (bear/bull), iron condors, butterflies, straddles, strangles, ratio spreads, and more, it’s easy to open several options legs in only a few trading positions. The fees to open and close these trades could overwhelm small profits, which is why so most of the Tastyworks closing fees are zero and why they have leg fee caps.

tastyworks options fees comparison

Tastyworks structured their pricing so that each opening option contract on stocks and ETFs costs $1.00, but up to a maximum commission of $10 per leg. The closing commission is free ($0.00) because they wanted to create a pricing model where traders could close their options trades when necessary, without concern for commissions. With a $1.00 to open and $0.00 to close, this makes Tastyworks pricing comparable to platforms that charge $0.50 buy/sell per options contract on stocks and ETFs.

Of course, there are still some small exchange, clearing, and regulatory fees that apply on Tastyworks and all US trading platforms. For example all stock options trades are subject to a clearing fee of $0.10 per contract.

Options exercise and assignment on the platform costs $5.00.

tastyworks options

Tastyworks offers a range of cryptocurrencies for traders and investors with fees of 1% of the total crypto purchase, and 1% of the total sale to close, capped at $10.00. Their current offerings include Bitcoin (BTC/USD), Ethereum (ETH/USD), Bitcoin Cash (BCH/USD), and Litecoin (LTC/USD), Doge Coin (DOGE/USD), and Stellar (XLM/USD), among others.

ACH Deposits and withdrawals are free. Outgoing wires are $25 (domestic) and $45 (foreign). Fees are $5 for domestic checks and dividend checks and $10 for foreign checks.

In general, Tastyworks fees are competitive for high volume options traders because of the capped commissions. In addition to their options and futures specific tools, offerings, and indicators, their overall fee structure could be the difference between a profitable trader and one whose gains are greatly diminished by transaction costs.
