Instructions for New Clients

Opening a new account with J.P. Morgan Self-Directed Investing only takes a few minutes. First, go to chase.com. Click on “Investing by J.P. Morgan.” A drop-down menu will appear with several investing options.

How to Open a JP Morgan Account

Click on “Invest on your own.” This leads you to the brokerage section. The next page shows details about a $700 promotion and a green button to open an account. Click on it to begin.

A pop-up window will appear with three options: general investing, Traditional IRA, and Roth IRA. The general investing option is taxable and can have one or two owners.

No matter which account type you pick, you must have a valid U.S. address and a Social Security Number. Without these, you can’t open an account. Military addresses on U.S. bases abroad are allowed.

After choosing the account, you’ll begin the full application. If you are already a JPMorgan client with a chase.com login, you can say so, and some details will fill in automatically.

Without logging in, the first page of the application asks for your name, birthdate, Social Security Number, and more. U.S. citizenship isn’t required, but a U.S. residential address is.

A driver’s license or state ID is required to submit the application. No other ID forms are accepted for U.S. or foreign residents.

Enter the requested details and submit the application when ready.

New customers can also apply on a phone. Just tap on the link at the bottom of the Chase app (without logging in) to start a new account. This opens a mobile-friendly webpage for the same application. We found this process easy to use during testing.
