How to Open an Acorns Account

Opening an investment account with Acorns is fast and easy. Here are the details you need to know:

Requirements to Open an Acorns Account

There are two important stipulations to be aware of before opening an investment account with Acorns:

- Be 18 years of age or older
- Be a U.S. resident

Non-U.S. citizens can open accounts, although Acorns does require a residential address in the United States. The address cannot be a PO Box or business address.

Required Information

To comply with federal law, Acorns will attempt to verify every account application. Thus, applicants may be requested to upload a copy of a government-issued ID. This or another document can easily be uploaded through Acorns’ website or mobile app.

Acorns does require a valid Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to open an account.

Although Acorns wants to link an external bank account to pay for the invest account’s monthly fee, this step can initially be skipped if desired. However, a $5 deposit from a checking or savings account is required to actually start investing.
