Global Exchanges at Zackstrade

Did you know that it’s possible to trade on several foreign exchanges using multiple currencies with a single investment account at Zackstrade? Yes, it’s true. Keep reading and we’ll show how to become a truly international trader in no time.

Who Is Eligible?

Zackstrade accepts applications from residents of numerous countries around the globe, meaning that virtually anyone anywhere in the world can open an account and trade. We didn’t say at zero price, however. More on that in a bit.

In total, we counted 218 nations, from Algeria to Zambia; only a handful is missing, such as Cuba and North Korea.

One of the disadvantages of truly international trading is the taxation of such financial activity. Whenever you open an IB account, you will need to state your country of tax residency. This is a simple process for Americans who open US-based accounts.

Foreigners residing in the US who open accounts with Zackstrade will need to fill out Forms W-8. There are a few different versions of the form, and the exact kind depends on the account type.

Access to Foreign Exchanges

With an Zackstrade account opened from any location, it is possible to trade on numerous exchanges around the world. There are three general areas that IB provides access to: North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.

Exchanges in the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South America are missing in action. Nevertheless, there are still literally hundreds of exchanges that IB customers can trade on. Here are a few examples:

North America:

  • Montreal Exchange
  • Toronto Stock Exchange
  • Chi-X
  • Mexican Derivatives Exchange
  • Boston Options Exchange
  • Chicago Stock Exchange (CHX)
  • Aequitas NEO

There are many more, but that gives you an idea.

  • Budapest Stock Exchange
  • Euronext Netherlands
  • SIX Swiss Exchange
  • Stuttgart Stock Exchange

  • Spanish Futures & Options Exchange (MEFF)

Again, this is just a sampling.

Tradable Assets

It’s not just stocks that are up for grabs here. Many asset classes can be traded on the above exchanges. These investments include warrants, options, futures, ETFs, and mutual funds. Forex can also be traded in an IB account, although forex trades don’t actually occur on the above exchanges.

Trades placed for stocks and ETFs by US-based accounts on the major American exchanges are eligible for $0 commissions. All other trades are not. Furthermore, trades for US-listed securities are only eligible for $0 commissions when the trades are placed inside of US-based retail (i.e., non-institutional) accounts. Other accounts will be charged commissions.

Fees for global trades vary by exchange and asset traded. Here are a few examples:

Oslo Stock Exchange: 0.05% of trade value with NOK 49 minimum

Vienna Stock Exchange: 0.1% of trade value with a €4 minimum

Exchanges in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania: 0.2% of trade value with a €10 minimum

Hong Kong Stock Exchange: 0.08% of trade value with a HKD 18 minimum

Shanghai-Hong Kong Connect and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Connect: 0.08% of trade value with a CNH 15 minimum

Japanese exchanges: 0.08% of trade value with a ¥80 minimum

The above prices are on a fixed schedule. Zackstrade also offers tiered pricing, which will benefit heavy-volume accounts. Here are some examples:

Moscow Exchange:

Monthly trade value less than 3,700,000,000 RUB: 0.05% of trade value with a RUB 95 minimum and a RUB 2,200 maximum (for monthly volume above 7,500,000,000 RUB: 0.02% of trade value with the same minimums and maximums)

Australian Securities Exchange (ASX): Varies from 0.08% of trade value to 0.015% of trade value, depending on total monthly volume with minimums varying from AUD$1 to AUD$5

Trade Example

Using IB’s very good software platform Trader Workstation, we were able to find many assets trading on lots of exchanges around the world. For example, when we typed in SIE (the ticker symbol for Siemens on the Frankfurt Exchange) in the trade ticket at the top-left of the program, we received drop-down choices for stocks, options, warrants, CFDs, futures, and bonds.

When we selected stocks, we were able to trade SIE directly on the Frankfurt Exchange in euros. There were several routing destinations on the trade ticket, and margin details were included as well. The estimated commission for our test trade was €7.12. Option chains populated fully for SIE, and contracts were easily tradable.

It’s easy to change the base currency for an account. Just log into the client center (on the website) and go to Manage Account > Settings > Configure Account > Base Currency. It does take one business day for changes to take effect.
