Ally Invest New Account Application

If you are looking to open a new online brokerage account, you may have considered investing with Ally Invest, the brokerage arm of Ally Financial. Their investment platform and offerings compare favorably to much of the competition, and so assuming that you’ve already decided that Ally is right for your portfolio, the account application process is the next step. Ally makes this pretty straightforward and easy to follow, but we’ve created this article to walk you through it as well in case you have any questions.

Starting the Application Process

To begin the application process, click on their promotion offer: Up to $3,500 cash bonus + 90 days of commission free trades (up to $500 in value). Then click the “Start Trading” button.

You will then be asked to fill out your name, email address, and indicate if you are a new or existing Ally Financial customer per the below screenshot. After clicking the “Register” button it will then ask you which type of self-directed account you want to open (the most common types are Individual, Joint, and IRA).

Your Personal Information

In Step 2 they start to get into the details, such as your date of birth, country of citizenship, marital status, and number of dependents. These are all standard questions that any broker will ask. There is also a blank text box for you to enter a promo code on this screen. Entering the code “CT60” will make your account eligible for Ally’s new account promotion, which we’ll cover after going through the application process. After you’ve completed the below information, click “Next” and you will be prompted for your social security number (all brokers will ask for this) to verify your identity.

After clicking next, you will be asked for your address (both physical and mailing if they are different) and phone number. Ally will also ask you to select and answer a security question for them to ask you if you ever forget your login information.

Employment Information and Affiliations

On the next page Ally will ask you for your employment information and whether you or anyone in your family has any affiliation with financial regulatory agencies or if you or any relatives sit on the board of a publically traded company. They will also ask if you or anyone in your family owns 10% or more of a publically traded company.

These questions while personal and specific, are standard questions that all brokers are legally required to ask for compliance and oversight purposes. Most people will be able to answer “No” to both of these questions, and if not it’s not a big deal. If you answer yes, Ally will probably just want to get some additional details from you.

Your Financial Profile

Next up will be a series of questions asking you about your personal finances (i.e. salary and net worth). This screen and the one that follows will also ask you if you have any prior investing experience and what your investment objective is. Most brokers will ask a few of these personal experience and situational questions so that they can better anticipate the type and frequency of trades you might place in your new account. Your answers here won’t really impact the features of your account, so don’t feel stressed if you’re not sure or don’t know yet.

Funding Your Account

After this screen, you’re done with the “heavy lifting”. All that remains is to read the fine print in Ally’s disclosure/agreement and sign on the dotted line. Ally will approve most accounts within minutes. After this you can proceed to fund your new brokerage account (you’ll need the bank account and routing numbers of whichever savings or checking account you plan to pull the funds from).

Promotional Offer

As we mentioned earlier, using the promo code “CT60” when opening your account by 4/30/19 will make you eligible for their new account bonus, which is a combination of free trades and hard cash. If you deposit at least $10,000 in your Ally Invest account within 60 days of opening you will get commission-free trading for 90 days as well as a $50 cash bonus. Larger deposits will get you the free trades as well, plus larger cash bonuses. Deposits between $25,000 and $99,999 will receive a $200 cash bonus, with larger incremental deposits receiving larger cash bonuses, up to a maximum cash bonus of $3,500 for deposits in excess of $2,000,000.

Once the promotion requirements are met, the cash bonus will be credited to your account within 10 business days. Your qualifying deposit (less any market losses) must remain in your account for at least 300 days or else Ally retains the right to revoke the cash bonus.

In summary, Ally Invest makes their account application process quick and easy because it’s in their best interest to get your business. They ask all the standard questions that every broker will and nothing more. The process shouldn’t take more than 10 or 15 minutes, and most applications are approved within minutes after submission.
