Choose the Type of Account You Want

When you scroll down, Ameritrade will ask you to fill out your contact details, such as your name, email and phone number, and ask you to indicate your U.S. citizenship status. Note that you do not need to be a U.S. citizen to open an account with TD Ameritrade. The next question will ask you to choose which type of account you want to open. Ameritrade (and all other brokers) will also ask if you or a member of your immediate family works in a regulatory capacity in financial services or is a large shareholder or director of a public firm. While these questions are personal, they are asked by all brokers as U.S. law requires this information be collected for anyone opening a brokerage account.

Review and Submit

The next step will be to briefly review all of the information you provided for accuracy before submitting. TD Ameritrade will also ask you to select a whether you want the idle cash in your account to remain there (where it is SIPC-insured up to $250,000) or to be automatically swept into an FDIC-insured deposit account (where it is insured up to $500,000). We would recommend the latter since it offers additional insurance for added protection in the unlikely event that TD Ameritrade ever went under and couldn’t honor its customer’s deposits.

You are now ready to make your initial deposit. All you will need is the routing and bank account numbers of the checking or savings account from which you would like to fund your new Ameritrade account.
