Account Setup

Although the card has a strong list of features, getting Schwab’s debit card does require opening the right account setup. The card is connected to a Schwab Bank Investor Checking account, and this checking account is available only when linked to a Schwab One brokerage account. The brokerage account is not the account that directly pays debit card transactions, but the linked brokerage account still must be opened and maintained. It can be opened at the same time as the checking account, which is the account linked to the debit card for transactions.

Getting the Schwab Debit Card

In other words, two linked accounts are needed to get the debit card. If you do not already have a Schwab account, the best starting point is the orange-brown button to open an account. It appears on many pages within the Schwab site. Click it and look for the option to open a Schwab Bank Investor Checking account. In addition to the online application, Schwab also provides fillable PDF forms that can be completed and returned. This is the paper form for the checking account if a brokerage account has already been opened.

If you already have an investment account with Schwab, it is probably easier to log in, click the link to open an account (it appears under the Account tab in the upper-left corner), and apply online for the bank account.

The Schwab Bank Investor Checking account must be funded before Schwab sends the debit card. Once the bank account is open and funded, the card can be managed through Schwab’s website and mobile app.

Limits on the Schwab Debit Card

Schwab does place some important limits on its Visa debit card, and it is helpful to know these numbers before attempting a larger transaction. Here are the limits:

Daily Cash Withdrawal Limit: $1,000
Daily Purchase Limit: $15,000

The cash-withdrawal limit applies across ATMs, tellers at participating Visa financial institutions, and cash back from Interlink and STAR merchants. The daily purchase cap can be raised up to the total amount of available funds in the linked bank account, including funds available through overdraft protection. This higher limit must be requested and is subject to approval, along with additional terms and conditions.

Adding Checks

If you open the card with a Schwab checking account, you may also receive complimentary checks that are not subject to the debit-card limits listed above. Schwab requires the account to be funded with a minimum of $100 before checks and deposit slips are mailed.

Managing the Card

The Visa debit card can be managed through Schwab’s website and mobile app. On the website, click the bank account connected to the debit card to open a summary page with account details. In the right-hand column, there is a list of bank services. One of them is Debit Card Travel Notice. Click that link to open a page with options to create a travel notice and access other card tools, such as reporting a stolen card and locking or unlocking the card.

Schwab Debit Card Fees and Minimums

There is no account minimum to obtain or keep Schwab’s debit card. There is also no fee to get Schwab’s debit card, and there is no annual fee for it, either. Schwab’s Investor Checking account has no monthly service fees, no account maintenance fees, and no activity fees, although fees may apply for optional services such as custom check orders, outgoing wires, or rush delivery.

In addition, there are no foreign transaction fees for using the card in a foreign currency, and Schwab refunds ATM fees for eligible cash withdrawals made with the Schwab Bank Visa Platinum Debit Card. This makes the card especially useful for international travelers.
