Account Setup

Although this is a solid set of features, you'll need to put in some effort to get Schwab's debit card. Schwab has a policy that requires opening a brokerage account in order to open a bank account, which is required to get the card. While the brokerage account won't directly link to the card, it still has to be opened and kept active. You can open it at the same time as the checking or savings account, which will connect to the card for transactions.

Getting the Schwab Debit Card

So, you have to open two accounts to get the debit card. If you don't already have a Schwab account, the best starting point is the orange-brown button to open an account, which appears on many Schwab pages. Click it, then look for the option to open a checking or savings account. In addition to the online form, Schwab provides fillable PDF forms that you can complete and submit. This is the physical form to open a checking account if you already have a brokerage account.

If you already have a Schwab investment account, it's likely simpler to just log in, click the link to open an account (found under the Account tab in the top-left), and apply for the bank account online.

You must deposit some funds (any amount) into the main checking or savings account before Schwab will send the debit card. Once the first bank account is open, you can attach extra checking accounts to the same card later on.

Limits on the Schwab Debit Card

Schwab places some clear limits on its Visa debit card, and it's wise to know them before making a transaction and facing an unexpected issue. Below are the limits:

Daily Cash Withdrawal Limit: $1,000
Daily Purchases Limit: $15,000

The withdrawal limit counts transactions at ATMs, in-person tellers at Visa institutions, and cash back through Interlink and STAR merchants. The purchase limit can go up to the entire balance in the linked bank account (including any overdraft protection). You must request this option, and it's only granted after approval with additional conditions.

Adding Checks

If you pair the card with a Schwab checking account, you can also get paper checks that aren't restricted by the above limits. Schwab does need a $100 balance to provide these checks.

Managing the Card

You can handle the Visa debit card through Schwab's website or its mobile app. On the website, just pick the bank account connected to the card, and you'll see a summary page. In the right column, there is a section for bank services. One of these is Debit Card Travel Notice. Select it to see options like creating a travel notice, reporting a stolen card, or locking and unlocking the card.

Schwab Debit Card Fees and Minimums

There is no account minimum needed to get or keep Schwab's debit card. There's also no fee to obtain Schwab's debit card, and there is no annual fee for it, either. There is no cost to use it, and Schwab does not charge for shipping, so this card is truly free.

Additionally, there's a 0% foreign transaction fee, and Schwab refunds ATM fees worldwide. Clearly, it's an excellent choice for people who travel internationally.
