Merrill Lynch Investing

Both Merrill Lynch and Merrill Edge are owned by Bank of America. Merrill Lynch provides traditional wealth management primarily to large institutions and high net worth clients, while Merrill Edge is the company’s on-line discount broker.

Merrill Lynch offers managed account services that start at 2.7% of an account’s value. This fee decreases to less than 1.5% for balances above $25 million. There is no annual account fee, and the broker-dealer charges no commissions on stock and ETF trades.

Merrill Edge charges a much lower 0.85% for its managed account package. It specializes in self-directed accounts, which come with a $6.95 stock commission. This charge is waived up to 30 times per month for Bank of America clients who have at least $25,000 on deposit with the bank.

Merrill Edge offers a very advanced desktop platform for active traders. Its website has many nice features, including a handy trade bar.
