Available Assets

Robinhood originally launched with just stocks and exchange-traded funds. Since then, the brokerage firm has added event contracts, futures, options, closed-end funds, ADRs, and cryptocurrencies. Some over-the-counter stocks are also available.

moomoo offers stocks, ETFs, options, and crypto. It also provides closed-end funds, Hong Kong stocks, and eligible China A-shares through Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Connect.

Robinhood has managed accounts through Robinhood Strategies.

Margin

To keep things simple, moomoo charges a flat 6.8% for margin debit balances on U.S. securities. This rate is only valid for U.S.-listed securities.

Robinhood and moomoo both offer cash and margin accounts. Robinhood charges 5% for debit balances under $50K.

moomoo’s software displays margin details such as maintenance requirement on every entered ticker symbol. Robinhood’s software doesn’t do this.

Websites

When it’s time to trade, Robinhood’s site provides charting, asset profiles, and a fairly good order ticket. A chart can be expanded across the full width of the screen, and there are technical studies and multiple chart styles.

Robinhood or moomoo

Robinhood’s order ticket has 6 trade types:

- Market
- Limit
- Stop loss
- Stop limit
- Trailing stop
- Recurring

The trailing order can be set as either a percentage or dollar amount. The order ticket is built into every asset profile in the upper-right corner, so it does not need to be opened separately to place a trade.

Asset profiles also include earnings histories, analyst ratings, and key stats. However, moomoo still offers more research and screening tools.

moomoo’s site has an equity screener. Robinhood also has stock-screening tools, although moomoo still offers a strong research setup. A stock profile at moomoo has a decent amount of information on it. Examples include key stats, news articles, company announcements, and social networking.

moomoo or Robinhood

A trade ticket is integrated on the right-hand side of the profile. moomoo’s website has grown and improved quite a bit, and web trading is available for U.S.-listed securities, although options and futures require the app or desktop platform.

Winner: Robinhood

Mobile Trading

moomoo’s mobile app also has trading capability. The order ticket has 8 trade types:

- Market
- Limit
- Stop limit
- Stop
- Limit if touched
- Market if touched
- Trailing stop limit
- Trailing stop

moomoo versus Robinhood

Along with the advanced trade ticket, we found several other pro-level features on moomoo’s app. These include Level II quotes, short-sale analysis, technical indicator analysis, institutional holdings, and more. Many of these details are shown in graphical format for easier viewing.

Other app highlights include simulated trading, Moo (the social-networking platform), integrated option strategies, and on-demand videos from Bloomberg TV.

Robinhood’s mobile app doesn’t have any videos. It also doesn’t have a community forum for clients, and there is no demo mode. Still, there are some good tools on the app. For example, there is an option-strategy builder that guides the user step by step through creating a multi-leg trade.

Robin Hood vs moomoo

The order form has 6 trade types. The most unusual one is recurring, which sets up a systematic purchase of a security.

Winner: Robinhood

Desktop Trading

moomoo traders have one more trading resource: the company’s desktop platform. This software brings the broker’s trading experience to its highest level. There is a currency exchange calculator that can convert among the U.S. dollar, Chinese RMB, and Hong Kong dollar.

The main menu sits in the left-hand column. A Quant tab was added more recently. With this tab, users can create a quant strategy in three steps. No programming is required.

Although moomoo does not yet offer live futures trading for U.S. accounts, there is a futures analysis tool on the desktop platform. It can be found under the Explore tab (look for the Futures Analysis tab at the top). It shows correlations, historical relevance, and charts of price movements.

The trade ticket for securities has additional order types compared to the mobile ticket, and charts include many tools and features.

Robinhood now has Robinhood Legend, a browser-based desktop platform for stocks, options, crypto, and futures. However, it does not have a downloadable desktop program like moomoo’s.

Additional Services

IPO Access: Both Robinhood and moomoo offer access to Initial Public Offerings.

Cash Management: In addition to its brokerage accounts, Robinhood offers banking services with some very appealing perks, such as earning bonus investments for using its debit card. moomoo has a cash sweep program, but it does not offer the same banking and card features that Robinhood provides.

Extended-hours Trading: Both firms offer pre-market, after-hours, and overnight trading, although eligible securities and exact session rules differ. Robinhood offers 24 Hour Market trading for eligible stocks and ETFs from Sunday evening through Friday evening. moomoo offers pre-market, after-hours, and overnight U.S. stock trading, plus access to Hong Kong and China A-share market hours.

Individual Retirement Accounts: Only available at Robinhood.

DRIP Service: Available inside both accounts.

Fractional Shares: Possible at Robinhood and moomoo.

Winner: Robinhood

Promotions

Robinhood: Free stock + 3% IRA match or 2% transfer match at Robinhood.

moomoo: Up to $1,000 in Nvidia stock at moomoo.

Recommendations

Small Accounts: Neither brokerage house has account fees or minimums, so either can work for a small account. Both firms also offer fractional-share trading, although Robinhood’s simpler design may work better for smaller beginner accounts.

Retirement Savers & Long-Term Investors: Because Robinhood is the only brokerage firm with IRAs, it is better than moomoo.

Active Stock Trading: With moomoo’s very good desktop software, it is our pick.

Beginners: Robinhood does a better job of simplifying the trading experience. For example, its software is easier to use. However, moomoo’s software offers paper trading, which could be very useful for beginners.

Mutual Funds: Neither brokerage firm here has them. Charles Schwab does.

moomoo vs Robinhood Final Judgment

Yes, moomoo does outperform Robinhood in a few areas. But overall Robinhood offers more appealing services and features.
