E*TRADE Hidden Fees
If you are thinking about opening a brokerage account with E*TRADE, it’s important to understand the company’s fees, including any less obvious costs. This article provides a straightforward look at E*TRADE’s pricing to uncover any hidden fees.
Free Services at E*TRADE
Let’s start by looking at the services E*TRADE offers at no extra cost. The Power E*TRADE platform is available to customers without a platform fee. There are no trading requirements to use this platform.
Other technical tools, like the E*TRADE mobile app, are also free and come with helpful features, including mobile check deposit, options trading, and live financial news streaming. Additionally, E*TRADE’s smartwatch app is available at no extra cost.
There are no fees for closing short options priced below $0.10, and trading U.S. Treasury bonds is commission-free, although a markup or markdown may still apply in some fixed-income transactions.
Opening and closing an investment account at E*TRADE is free, with no ongoing charges for inactivity, account maintenance, or low balances.
Services E*TRADE Charges For
E*TRADE does charge a $2 fee for each paper statement mailed. There are some exceptions, including customers enrolled in electronic statements, retirement and custodial accounts, and clients who meet certain linked-account balance requirements.
Trading over the phone with a live agent incurs an additional $25 fee on top of the standard commission.
The legacy E*TRADE Pro platform has been retired. E*TRADE now offers Power E*TRADE Pro, and directed trades sent to an ECN through that platform are subject to a $0.005-per-share directed order fee during regular market hours and Extended Hours sessions.
For mutual funds, E*TRADE lists no-load, no-transaction-fee funds at $0, while load funds carry the sales load shown in the prospectus.
Though E*TRADE doesn’t charge annual IRA fees, transaction fees, fund expenses, brokerage commissions, and service fees can still apply.
Events like stock splits and mergers, which are mandatory company actions, result in a $38 fee. As these events are out of the investor’s control, this fee can be frustrating.
E*TRADE Monthly and Inactivity Fees
