DEGIRO Promotion
€100 transaction cost voucher at Europe's leading stock broker.
DEGIRO Overview
This review looks at the good and bad points of DEGIRO, a Dutch online broker. The company started in 2008 but only began operating in
2013, making it relatively new.
From the beginning, DEGIRO focused on offering cheap trading fees, particularly for stock trading. When DEGIRO
started, they claimed their fees would be "up to 99% lower than other Dutch brokers". This got them lots of media
attention and helped them grow into one of the most competitive low-cost brokers globally.
Opening a DEGIRO Account
DEGIRO works in 18 European countries: UK, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, France,
Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Spain, Norway, Portugal,
Greece, Hungary, and Ireland. Opening an account is simple and
takes
less than 15 minutes. To start trading, you need to transfer money to your new account, which might take longer
if the account isn't in your country.
For investment groups signing up, local laws apply. In the Netherlands this means signing an
agreement and providing group documents. This account opening example is based on the Dutch DEGIRO
site for the group 'Phoenix Investment'.
The sign-up process had great customer support available by chat, email, and phone. The phone
staff can answer many tough questions. Note that US citizens can't use DEGIRO because of
complicated US tax rules.
DEGIRO Pros
DEGIRO has always been a low-cost broker and still is. Here are some of their fees for different
investments:
Investments | Commissions |
UK Stocks | £1.75 + €1 |
US Stocks | €0 + €1 |
Global Stocks | €2 + €1 |
ETFS (CORE SELECTION) | €0 |
OPTIONS | €0.75 |
FUTURES | €0.75 |
DEGIRO Cons
A big problem with DEGIRO is you can't trade foreign options or turbos. For example, with 'DEGIRO-Netherlands' you can only trade Dutch options and turbos. Remember that DEGIRO is still quite new and this affects what they offer.
Another issue is that DEGIRO doesn't show up-to-date portfolio values by default. Their website says they offer real-time prices for free, but this only works for the CHI-X exchange. For other exchanges, you pay extra (€1.50 to €18.20 per month). Normally, prices are delayed by 15 minutes.
Usage, Interface and System Design
The website is well-organized and easy to use. The menu and search bar help you move around the site easily. The search works very well, showing results for different investment types. For example, searching for Tesla shows stocks, turbos, and warrants:
Also, DEGIRO offers many order types to suit different trading styles.
One weak point is that DEGIRO's website doesn't offer research tools, though this is common for low-cost brokers. Their app (for Android and iOS) has improved much in the past year, with better design and extra security requiring a 5-digit code. They could improve by adding a desktop trading platform.
DEGIRO Review Summary
Overall, DEGIRO is a below average broker because of its high costs.
