Can I Buy Bitcoin at Charles Schwab?
At this time,
Charles Schwab still does not provide direct cryptocurrency trading inside a standard Schwab brokerage account, although Schwab has announced a coming Schwab Crypto account for Bitcoin and Ethereum. For now, Schwab customers can still get crypto exposure through several indirect investment choices.

Another indirect way to participate in the crypto market is by
buying and selling shares of companies that have a connection to cryptocurrencies in some form. Because Schwab charges
$0 commissions on U.S.-listed stocks, this route can be less expensive, especially for accounts that trade often.
A useful place to start on Schwab’s website when looking for crypto-related stocks
is the equity screener. It can be found by opening the Research tab and choosing the link to the equity hub. In the stock screener, choose Information Technology under the Sectors and Industries checkbox in the Basic section.
Inside the IT category, several narrower industries can be selected. Unfortunately, there is no separate crypto-exposure category, although many technology companies do provide some connection to blockchain, digital assets, or the broader crypto market.
One stock that appeared in the search results was Oracle Corporation. Trading under ticker symbol ORCL, the company has research and development tied to blockchain technology, which is the recordkeeping system behind many cryptocurrency transactions.
Schwab’s website for ORCL shows just 1 star out of 5 from Morningstar, which is the lowest rating available. It also shows an outperform rating from Refinitiv with a price target of $131. At the time of this update, Oracle’s market price is about $194. Oracle pays a quarterly dividend of $0.50, which works out to an annual dividend yield of roughly 1.0%.

Charles Schwab Crypto Funds
In addition to individual stocks, investors can also buy groups of them through funds, which may help reduce single-stock risk and volatility. Schwab brokerage clients have access to many technology funds that own crypto-related companies.
Schwab offers the three major fund types: mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, and closed-end funds. Closed-end funds and ETFs trade with
$0 online commissions, while mutual funds may have loads, transaction fees, or neither, depending on the fund.
Finding mutual funds that own technology stocks is straightforward. Open the fund screener under the Research tab and look for IT funds in the Sector Exposure section. The results can also be narrowed by load status and transaction-fee status.
When we used this process, we found the BlackRock Technology Opportunities Fund (ticker symbol BSTSX). The mutual fund has no load and no transaction fee when traded at Schwab. BSTSX invests in 73 holdings, many of which are technology companies involved in areas such as chips, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and other technologies that can overlap with blockchain or crypto-related infrastructure. Schwab’s profile for the BlackRock fund shows total fund assets of more than $8 billion, so this is a large fund. Its turnover rate is 52%, even though the fund is actively managed. It has an overall Morningstar rating of 4 stars.
Charles Schwab Crypto Options
Schwab has a broad options-trading program with contracts on ETFs, stocks, and futures. Some lightly traded securities may not have options available, but those that do can provide another way to build a crypto-related trading strategy.
A good starting point is again Schwab’s website, this time under the Trade tab. Selecting the options link opens an area with options chains and a strategy builder. Entering the ticker symbol of a stock or ETF brings up available options strategies. On thinkorswim, qualified clients can also trade options on futures.
During our research on Schwab’s website, we found a very large number of options contracts on AMD, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. AMD makes hardware that can be used in crypto mining, which is the process of creating some cryptocurrencies. Because AMD’s products can play a role in the crypto industry, the stock and its options can provide meaningful exposure to the crypto market.

Robinhood as an Alternative
Robinhood offers trading in options, ETFs, stocks, and futures, which, as discussed above,
can create
indirect exposure to digital currencies. The bigger difference is that
direct cryptocurrency trading is also available at Robinhood, giving investors another way to participate in the crypto market.

These cryptocurrencies are easy to locate on Robinhood. After logging in, scroll to the Trending Lists section and select Tradable Crypto. You can also search for Tradable Crypto in the search bar at the top of the site, where a drop-down menu will show Tradable Crypto in the results.
On the Tradable Crypto page, Robinhood displays the supported coins along with their symbols, prices, daily price changes, and market caps. The list can be added to the account’s watchlists by selecting the green Follow button.
To open a coin’s profile, click on it in the Tradable Crypto list. A coin can also be found by typing its name or symbol into the search bar at the top. Digital currencies that Robinhood displays only for market data can be researched on the platform but not traded.
Robinhood’s crypto profiles provide a basic amount of information. During our review, we found news articles from Benzinga and Yahoo Finance. A chart appears at the top of the page with up to 5 years of price history. It can be enlarged by selecting the Advanced button in the upper-right corner of the graph. Next to the Advanced button is an icon for alert settings. Robinhood offers crypto price alerts.
The crypto order panel appears in the upper-right corner of the coin’s profile. Robinhood supports
market, limit, stop, stop-limit, and recurring crypto orders.
Robinhood also supports
crypto transfers. It is possible to transfer supported digital currencies into or out of Robinhood. The tools for sending and receiving crypto are built into the crypto detail page and order actions. Select Send or Receive to begin the process. A coin can be added to a watchlist by clicking the Add button that appears beneath the order ticket.
Although Robinhood has retirement accounts,
products and services offered by Robinhood Crypto are not available inside Robinhood IRAs.
