2022 TD Ameritrade (TDA) 24 hours trading in FXI, SPY, EEM, GLD, SLV, DIA, UNG, TLT, IWM, QQQ, USO, SH, RWM, PSQ, AGG, DOG, EWA, EFA, EWJ, IJH, VTI, XLF, XLE, and XLK.

TD Ameritrade Launches 24/5 Trading in Select Securities

If you work during the weekday and aren’t able to buy and sell securities because of your schedule, TD Ameritrade may have the solution for you. The broker is the first in the United States to provide trading 24 hours a day, 5 days a week in a small list of ETF’s. We expect this list to grow in the future, eventually including a selection of stocks.

Available ETF’s

Currently, the TD Ameritrade (TDA) allows FXI, SPY, EEM, GLD, SLV, DIA, UNG, TLT, IWM, QQQ, USO, SH, RWM, PSQ, AGG, DOG, EWA, EFA, EWJ, IJH, VTI, XLF, XLE, and XLK to be traded all hours of the weekday. Orders are sent to electronic communication networks (ECN’s). Only limit orders can be used, and they expire at 8:00 pm, EST. So if you want your order to remain live overnight, you need to place it after 8 o’clock. If you place in at 7:30 pm, it will expire in 30 minutes.

Not Extended Hours

It should be pointed out that this isn’t an extended-hours session. Many brokers, TD Ameritrade included, allow traders to buy and sell securities in a pre-market session (an hour or so before the market opens) and after hours (an hour or so after the market closes). TD Ameritrade’s 24/5 session functions throughout the night into the pre-market and then on to the market session.

Risks

TD Ameritrade cautions its customers that trading overnight will come with significant risks. These include decreased liquidity and higher bid-ask spreads. Effectively, trading in the overnight session will be more expensive. Furthermore, orders may only be partially filled or may not be filled at all.

The price of a security in the overnight session may reflect its previous trade on a particular ECN. If your order goes to a different ECN, the price could differ significantly.

Pricing

Amazingly, TD Ameritrade has decided not to add any surcharges to overnight orders. Thus, it will cost the broker’s normal $0 commission to trade during these times.

Many of the funds on the overnight list have very small bid-ask spreads during normal day sessions, although these will increase overnight.

Platforms

In order to buy and sell overnight ETF’s, you must trade on TD Ameritrade’s desktop platform thinkorswim or on the broker’s Mobile Trader app. You can’t use the website, Trade Architect, or one of the other mobile apps TD Ameritrade offers. You’ll want to specify ‘EXTO’ when submitting an overnight order. EXT means extended-hours and O means overnight.

Customer Service

If you have any questions about this new fascinating service, TD Ameritrade has agents available all hours of the day and night who can assist you with any issues you have. In addition to its phone service, you can contact a rep through Twitter and Facebook Messenger. For some reason, TD Ameritrade does not have an on-line chat feature on its website.
