TD Ameritrade Thinkorswim after hours, extended hours time period. How to enter pre market and after market orders on Thinkorswim.

Extended Hours Trading on Thinkorswim

If you have a thinkorswim (TD Ameritrade) brokerage account, you have access to the pre-market session, which is from 7 am until 9:28 am, and the after-hours period, which lasts from 4:02 until 8 o’clock. TD Ameritrade does not charge anything for trading during these special periods.

Trading securities during the regular market session or during extended hours is so very 2017. If you want to be up to speed with current trends, it’s time to check out overnight trading. This new service is being rolled out by a few brokerage firms, one of which is TD Ameritrade.

Using thinkorswim, you can trade selected ETF’s 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. Here are the details:

After the Bell Rings

When the regular session ends, you can log into thinkorswim and enter a ticker symbol to get tick-by-tick information. The best place to do this is under the “Charts” tab. Click on the “Charts” icon under this tab and enter a ticker symbol. If the security is eligible for overnight trading, you will see “EXTO Eligible” in purple font in the row that contains the ticker field. After the ticker field is the security’s name (SPDR S&P 500 ETF for SPY, for example). After the name is the current price in green font, and after the price is the day’s change, in both dollar and percentage figures. And after this is the “EXTO Eligible” if it exists.

Available Securities

Most ETF’s and all stocks are not currently available for overnight trading at TD Ameritrade. Only a few ETF’s are eligible for 24/5 trading, although we expect this policy to change in the future. In fact, TD Ameritrade has already promised to add to the list.

The exchange-traded funds that can be traded on thinkorswim outside of extended hours include FXI, SPY, EEM, GLD, SLV, DIA, UNG, TLT, IWM, QQQ, USO, SH, RWM, PSQ, AGG, DOG, EWA, EFA, EWJ, IJH, VTI, XLF, XLE, and XLK. Although it's not a big list, at least it’s a start. We look forward to more soon.

How To Enter a Trade on Thinkorswim During Extended Hours

To place an order for an overnight ETF outside of regular or extended hours, the procedure is the same as for any other security at any other time. You can right click on a graph on thinkorswim and select buy or sell from the drop-down menu. This will produce a populated trading ticket in the bottom portion of the platform.

Thinkorswim Pre market Trading

One difference between regular and extended-hours trades and overnight trades is that overnight orders automatically expire at 8:00 pm. So, for example, if you submit an overnight trade for QQQ on Monday at 6:45 pm, it will expire an hour and 15 minutes later, at 8:00 pm on Monday. If you submit an order at 8:01 pm on Monday, it will expire at 8:00 pm on Tuesday.

Available Platforms for Overnight Trading

TD Ameritrade has chosen to restrict overnight trading to its desktop platform thinkorswim and one of its mobile apps: Mobile Trader. Other TD Ameritrade platforms, including the website and other mobile apps, cannot be used to submit overnight trades.

TD Ameritrade cautions its customers that trading in the overnight session carries additional hazards. For example, there is less liquidity, and an order may not be completely filled. Volatility tends to be higher as well.
