Fees on Ameriprise’s Managed Accounts: Highlights
• Investing accounts at Ameriprise Financial have a variety of fees and minimums, depending on the exact account setup.
• Commission-free trading is not available in brokerage accounts at Ameriprise.
• Financial-planning has a separate pricing schedule.
Before opening any type of investing account with Ameriprise Financial, be sure you fully understand its fee schedule for such accounts.
Fees for Advisory Accounts at Ameriprise
Investment-advisory accounts at Ameriprise are charged a recurring management fee, which varies according
to the package chosen. In any case,
Ameriprise advisory fee will not exceed 2% of assets under
management per year. The exact fee will be disclosed at the point of account opening.
In addition to the standard management fee, Ameriprise may charge managed accounts extra fees for additional services. These, too, must be disclosed by Ameriprise in writing. There are no commissions charged on trades inside managed accounts, however.
Ameriprise’s investment-advisory accounts do have minimum-deposit requirements. These range from $25,000 up to $500,000, depending on the program and strategy chosen. Here are some examples we found during our research:
Investment strategy | Household minimum | Initial account minimum | Maintenance account minimum |
SPS Advantage | $25,000 | $2,000 | $1,000 |
SPS Advisor | $100,000 | $2,000 | $1,000 |
Active Portfolios® | n/a | $25,000 | $15,000 |
Select Separate Account | n/a | $50,000 - $100,000 | n/a |
The minimums listed above could be lower in some cases. For example, an Active Growth Builder Portfolios within the Active Portfolios program only requires a $5,000 deposit and $4,000 to maintain the account.
Fees for Brokerage Accounts at Ameriprise
Self-directed accounts at Ameriprise have no minimums and no advisory fees. While this policy does represent an improvement over the managed accounts, the drawback is the assessment of trading fees and annual flat account fees. Transactions of securities will come with commissions, the full list of which will be disclosed in writing during account opening. Here are a few examples:
Transaction fee on mutual funds | $39.95 |
Retail order handling fee | $6 |
Late trade settlement | $15 |
Treasury Auctions | $40 |
The annual fees are as follows:

Custodial account | $50 |
Late trade settlement | $25 |
T Ameriprise ONE® | $100 |
Coverdell account | $10 |
IRA | $75 |
Custodial 401(a) | $75 |
The yearly fees can be avoided in a variety of ways. For example, customers who are Achiever Circle Elite members pay no annual fees. It does take $500,000 in household assets to enter this program.
