Schwab Wealth Management Review Highlights
• Charles Schwab provides wealth management, financial planning, and many other investment services.
• Schwab’s Wealth Advisory™ service has relatively low fees, but it also has a high investment minimum.
• Schwab offers several investment-advisory programs for clients who do not meet the wealth-management minimum.
Overview of Schwab Wealth Management
Schwab created its Wealth Advisory program for more affluent clients. It won’t be the right service for every investor, though, so it’s important to review the details.
Schwab Wealth Advisory™
Schwab’s Wealth Advisory program is a non-discretionary investment-advisory program. Every account
includes a dedicated Wealth Advisor who is supported by a Schwab Wealth Advisory team of more than
800
team members. Because the program is offered in non-discretionary form, recommendations made for the
account must be approved by the client before trades are placed. The available investment list includes
the standard selection of securities—assets such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and ETFs.
The biggest obstacle for many investors will be the
Charles Schwab investment minimum; it’s $500,000.
Schwab’s pricing, however, is fairly reasonable. It uses a tiered schedule:
| Account Value | Annual fee |
| First $1 million | 0.80% |
| $1 million - $2 million | 0.75% |
| $2 million - $5 million | 0.70% |
| $5 million - $10 million | 0.50% |
| $10 million - $25 million | 0.30% |
| Assets over $25 million | 0.30% or less, as negotiated |
The annual fee is charged at the end of each quarter and is based on daily asset levels. A quarterly minimum fee may apply. There is no fee to open a Wealth Advisory account, and there’s no fee to close one, either.
Although a wealth-management relationship can begin by phone or e-mail, the best experience may come through one of Schwab’s many branch locations. Many Americans should be able to find a branch nearby. Here are a few examples:
Lone Tree, CO
Geneva, IL
Leawood, KS
Monroeville, PA
A Higher Return Way to Invest
Financial advisor and wealth management fees substantially reduce an investor’s portfolio value over the long term.
A less expensive approach is to
build a diversified portfolio with commission-free index funds at
Charles Schwab,
allowing more of the investment returns to remain in the account.

Financial Planning
One of the main reasons Schwab customers may want to enroll in the Wealth Advisory program is the financial planning included with the service. A broad range of services can be obtained from the financial advisor. They include:
- Education and family planning
- Retirement planning
- Risk management
- Tax-smart investment planning (Schwab does not provide specific individualized legal or tax advice)
- Estate planning
- Investment planning
- Banking (Schwab offers several cash-management tools through its affiliate Schwab Bank)
Schwab Advisor Network®
One major drawback of Schwab’s wealth-management program is the absence of a discretionary option. Schwab addresses this through its Advisor Network. This is a referral program Schwab maintains with prescreened independent financial advisors. In short, Schwab refers its own clients to independent investment professionals, and those professionals compensate Schwab for the referrals. The client does not pay a referral fee.
The investment programs available through these independent advisory firms may be offered in brokerage, managed discretionary, and managed non-discretionary formats. Financial planning is a standard feature.
Schwab Advisor Network currently has a
$2,000,000 minimum investable-assets requirement. Fees vary by the independent advisor selected.

Schwab Intelligent Portfolios®
The largest obstacle with both advisory programs reviewed so far is the minimum-deposit requirement. Schwab removes this hurdle with its automated advisory program. Called Intelligent Portfolios, it has only a
$5,000 investment minimum. Even better, Schwab charges no advisory fee for this program.
The main downside is that only ETFs are used in the account. No other investment vehicles are available. The second drawback is the lack of a dedicated human advisor. Accounts are managed, and trades are placed, by a computer program.
Schwab previously offered a hybrid program called Schwab Intelligent Portfolios Premium. That service had a $25,000 account minimum, a $30 monthly advisory fee, and a one-time $300 planning fee, but it has been phased out and is no longer the main current option for new customers.
Schwab Managed Portfolios™
Investors at Schwab who are not comfortable relying on trade recommendations from software but do not have $500,000 to deposit should look at Schwab’s Managed Portfolios™ program. Accounts are managed by investment professionals at Schwab Asset Management and require only
$25,000 to open. There are two investment choices: mutual funds and exchange-traded funds. Pricing depends on the type of funds used. Both programs start at
0.90% for the first $100,000 invested. Discounts are available for larger balances. The mutual-fund package reaches
0.20% at balances above $1 million, while the ETF package reaches
0.50% at balances above $1 million.
The drawback of either Managed Portfolio option is the lack of a one-on-one relationship with a dedicated financial planner. Accounts are monitored by a team of investment professionals. There is no financial planning.
Margin
Schwab does permit the use of leverage in some of its managed accounts. The details of such a service, including the cost, will be disclosed by the financial planner.
Our Recommendations
Small Accounts: None of Schwab’s investment-advisory programs are built for very small investors.
Webull
would be a better choice for small accounts.
Mutual Funds: The mutual-fund option in the Managed Portfolios program is one way to gain access to
mutual funds. The annual fee, however, is a drawback.
Self-directed brokerage accounts at Schwab have no advisory fees and provide access to thousands of mutual funds.
Beginners: A Wealth Advisory account at Schwab can be a good way to start investing (for
customers who have enough assets to qualify).
Active Stock Trading: A brokerage account at Schwab is a good way to trade equities.
Long-Term Investors and Retirement Savers: Schwab’s wealth-management service works well for
retirement planning and other long-term goals.

Schwab Wealth Management Review Verdict
Schwab has a solid wealth-management program that comes with a lower minimum investment amount than some competing wealth-management programs. Combined with the firm’s other advisory programs, investors from many backgrounds may find something useful here. Ultra-high-net-worth investors should still compare Schwab with other full-service wealth-management firms before making a final decision.
