Funding a Fidelity Account

There are several ways you can fund an account at Fidelity. Some are quite common, while others might be less familiar.

At Fidelity, you can deposit money via ETF, bank wire, check, or a third-party app. Each payment method comes with its own benefits. The best funding choice depends on which features fit your individual requirements.

Let’s discuss the available funding methods.

Fidelity Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) Time

The electronic funds transfer is probably the simplest way to get funds into a Fidelity account. To initiate an EFT, all that’s required is to link your personal bank account to your investment account and select EFT as your preferred transfer method.

Once the funds are deposited through an EFT with a linked bank, it usually takes a couple of days for the money to settle fully. However, at Fidelity, any EFT deposits can be used immediately to buy securities.

Fidelity ACH Transfer Fee and Limit

There are no fees for EFTs, and it is possible to deposit up to $250,000 in a single day.

Fidelity Wire Transfers

Another frequent way to get funds into your account is with a bank wire. Using this method also requires that you link a separate bank account to your Fidelity investment account.

You would choose the bank wire method if you want the funds to settle on the same day of the transfer, as long as the wire request is made before 4 p.m. ET.

Fidelity ACH Transfer Limit

At Fidelity, there is a $100,000 daily transfer limit for wires.

Fidelity Wire Transfer Fee

Fidelity does not charge a fee for wire transfers, but keep in mind that banks often charge for sending them.

Funding with a Check

Another convenient way to deposit money is by check. Fidelity makes it quite straightforward to fund any of your active accounts, including IRAs, college savings accounts, or custodial accounts. All you need is the mobile app to use the check deposit feature.

Fidelity Check Deposit

Using the app, go to the ‘Deposit Checks’ menu. After selecting the account you wish to fund, enter the check amount, endorse it, and use the deposit tool to take a picture of the check.

Funds deposited into a Fidelity account with a check are typically available within 4 business days.

Third-Party Apps

Interestingly, Fidelity accepts deposits from third-party apps and digital wallets. PayPal, Venmo, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and Apple Pay can all be used to fund an account. All it takes is adding your Fidelity account details (routing and account numbers) to the third-party app.

Square can currently be used to withdraw money from Fidelity, and the broker is working on setting up deposit options as well.
